Listen to the history of this acclaimed Houston Artist. it is truly inspiring. An interview about Virgil Grotfeldt with longtime collaborator, Waldo Bien with Virgil’s daughter, Jessica Grotfeldt. The finished project was played at the Deborah Colton Gallery in Houston, Texas for the 2023 exhibit, “Keeping Vigil: Select Works from the Estate of Virgil Grotfeldt.”

More on the process: it was shot on an iPhone by Jessica. In this manner, this project was truly reflective of Virgil’s artistic process. For instance there was a creative use of materials, non-existent budget, and a lot of heart. Virgil’s artwork explores materials like coal dust and topics like shamanism. In the same way, Katie explored the footage and worked her “storytelling magic” to help it all flow. Watch and enjoy the stories for yourself!

In short, Waldo discusses Virgil and Waldo’s partnership, their work with the Free International University, experiments with coal dust, and more.
